The Day of Thanksgiving is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursdayof November. It was officially declared a national holiday in the U.S. in 1941 by PresidentFranklin Roosevelt, before that, there were many dates for what is now regarded as alegitimate American date (other places like Canada also celebrate this date, but not in the same days). Many people celebrate the date with every family gathering or dinner enjoythe long weekend to travel. In school, children often do plays showing pilgrims and nativeAmericans celebrating an autumn harvest in communion. Every year there is a tradition at the White House. U.S. President capture a turkey the night before Thanksgiving Day, which is to live in the Kidwell Farm, a sort of zoo in Virginia. For 50 years, President HarryTruman started this tradition that is followed continuously all year.
In the U.S., in addition to turkey, other types of food are traditionally served as meals that day. In addition to roast turkey, dishes made with potatoes, squash, and blueberries areon the table tradition of Americans. Many of these dishes were actually cultivated by the natives and introduced to Europeans when they arrived.
Parades and sports also mark this day, many of them sponsored by stores to encouragethe start of Christmas shopping.
